    The most effective campaign is a diverse campaign.

    If you have the time and money I recommend doing all of the following.

    - Directory Submissions. Use paid directories or at least be sure the page your link will be on is included in the Google index.
    - Article writing and distributing with an author's box containing a link.
    - Press Release writing and distribution with links in the press release.
    - Research high ranking competitor backlinks and soliciting links from those sites.
    - Blogging, both your own blog and requesting or paying for links on other blog postings in your industry.

    Seriously, for best results get an expert to do it for you, if you link to the wrong type of website, you could actually do your website harm in the long run.
    Either contact me off line or post a project. (some of us charge by results!)

    Following on from Steves comments, keep away from any link from a site that is not related to your site or business in any way.

    If you get a link on a page with a high page rank, your rank will climb fast. This is not easy, since pages with a high rank are very selective in putting links.
    Do this link building step by step. Do not add your link where ever is possible. Do not use software to do it.
    I submited our site to: https://www.link-back.net/ This is a nice quality tool to see your rank grow.
    If you put in google: "link: www.yourcompetitor.com" you can see where your competitors are linked. Choose the quality links and try to become a link on that page too.
    Very important is the way the link is placed. Be sure there is always a brief description of your website and not just a link. Choose the most relavant keywords and use them in the description.
    But most important: check wether google indexes your site and how often. Each time you notice google has indexed you website, change something: add a link, change some content,... Google will visit your website more often when noticing that you regulary update. Focus on quality and content!

    the most effective link building exercise is to use the mark up language to produce a link that increase the traffic.
