Naming A Joint Supplement - $1000 For The Name

Posted by Anonymous on 2525 Points
I've been in business 14 years and still have a hard time coming up with names. We will be marketing a Joint support supplement (Vitamin) using an all time great baseball pitcher (contracts are in the process of being signed). I need a name that reflects baby boomers + in age who suffer from joint pain. This is a top quality product and will be marketed via radio, web, magazines and some television. We market direct to the consumer so product name is more important then our overall brand name. If you come up with a good one and we use it we will pay one person $1000. Thanks for your anticipated help.

Hi, I'll just suggest one name without trying to be all things for a very ambitious product from your initial brief description. My product name suggestion is a combination of words but also stands alone.

    First part...latin root perhaps?
    Bene
Something that promotes or enhances well-being; an advantage. ... synomyms; Well done, goodness and quality.

    Second part;
    Fit
    a. To be the proper size and shape for:
    b. To cause to be the proper size and shape

However for visual and branding purposes may I suggest adding another letter.

    BENNE-FIT

Wellness, goodness and a plus (benefit) for boomers.

Hope this sparks something, good luck!

Thank you for your efforts. These are great names; however, we are still going to look for additional suggestions. Some of the names are great; however, they infringe on an existing trademark or competitive name in use. I was very impressed by the quality of people responding and I hope to help you in your endeavors as well.

I don't quite get it. How are you going to select the final name? There are at least a dozen names here that look like they meet your specs, but no sense of which are serious considerations for you and which are not.

Are you planning a consumer research "bake-off," or is this going to be a judgment thing? If the latter, then who is the judge and what are he/she using as the selection criteria? If the former, have you thought about what kind of research you'll need?

You'll get a much better result if you can provide that kind of guidance.

P.S. If you need some help on this, or on a research methodology, let me know via private email.

Thank you for your comments. The product is a formula based on 5 well know ingredients, a High Quality Omega 3 Fish Oil, Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitan Sulfate, MSM and Boswellin. These ingredients are delivered in a softgel. The name that we are looking for should not be too generic like ArthriFlex or Joint Flex for several reason. These types of names are usually not available because they are competitive to similar names that already exist, they are difficult to trademark and they are difficult to come in at a high ranking using natural SEO. The name should reflect one of two strategies both of which are reinforced by some of the bright minds that have responded to this posting. The name can be a simple made up name, non-reflective of what the product does, possibly a play on ingredient names (i.e. Formula 55 or Bosweliflex) or it could be something that reflects the use of the product, which is difficult and why I'm still searching for the perfect name. Sometimes as suggested' thinking outside the box is the best solution, someone came up with the name "Joint Butter", I liked it; however, we believe it's not perfect for the mass market. The spokesperson is an x-professional athlete (All time great Pitcher, about 60 years old) and we are counting on him carrying a lot of influence. "mgoodman", you make a good point; however, I am unsure on whether or not to name the product to reflect the use, benefit or other, since the potential is great in all areas. I will follow up with you. Thank you for your continued efforts. I look forward to having a final resolution in naming this product. Thank you for all who have participated so far and I look forward toward additional name suggestions. The $1000 is still up for grabs, it will be money well spent.

    Jonathan,

Totally agree w/you about the made-up name which is why I provided the 10+ combinations noted above.

It would appear that the product will be carried w/the use of the personality so you could probably call it just about anything give this---as long as it is easy to pronounce and rolls off the tongue relatively easily:

    Cerbawell

    (my favorite)

    Lesa

The name you want could be Flexaid or Flexade (without a hyphen)
the .com is available for about 1k. the supporting domains are virgin. A quick TESS search shows no results.

Contact me when you're ready. We've done a lot of positioning/branding/naming projects across a whole range of industries and product categories. We're not magicians, but we do have a decent track record, and we're always up for a challenge.

FWIW, benefit names always win when you let consumers vote. That doesn't mean there are not some successful nonsense names, but they usually have lots of money to advertise and register the name and link it to an important benefit.

"These types of names are usually not available because they are competitive to similar names that already exist, they are difficult to trademark and they are difficult to come in at a high ranking using natural SEO."

This comment is why I suggest you use a person's name. Either someone who is a part of your on going brand story or a made up name. Dr. Zues (yes, it's taken) is an example of a name people just feel good about. There are endless names like Dr. Zues that are not a brand and not claimed in any way. Then after selecting the right name use the input from this post to create your tagline.

Also, with a person's name you may give up some ground with natural search (although the tagline will help). But a fun right name is better for social media marketing.

    Hope this helps,

    Steve

Just a word of caution about playing up too much on one "endorser" of the product - either by name or too much attention. If you do so, be sure to check into the person's background and "integrity-meter" thoroughly. Nothing is worse than getting (indirectly) associated with bad press through someone else's negligent actions.

Of course there's the other side: sincere testimonials by someone with great credibility can help your product soar. Good luck with your venture!

Konners is right: you wouldn't to promote a vitamin/supplement and have Barry Bonds be your spokesperson. Couldn't resist!

    hi there

great advice above. how about names that are completely different from regular names, how about these...

    "Relief Pitcher"
    or
    "Reliever"

taking cue from the Baseball pitcher who relieves the starting pitcher as your product is a supplement!

    "Battery"

as your brand and brand ambassador combindly will beat joint pain, takin cue from baseball where pitcher and catcher are jointly called battery.

the above 3 names are directly taken from basball. if you select these names, you need to keep in mind that you will have to always endorse your brand/product from baseball pitchers to relate more to the name.

    some other names...

    "Ace"
"Cartiport" or "Cartoport" (from cartilage support)
    "Cartiment" (from cartilage supplement)

    hope these will help.

    cheers!
