    David,
I am in the final stages of publishing a book called Target Driven Sales. It builds on some of the points you are looking for. If you contact me off-line, I would be happy to share some thoughts with you....

One of the very best books on positioning is "Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind," by Al Reis and Jack Trout. It's ten years old but don't be put off.

Target marketing has been around long enough to have some narrow titles out now -- in addition to general targeting, you can find books for targeting online markets, targeting the affluent, baby boomers, gen-Xers, seniors, the Hispanic market, etc. Connect with Frank to get the insight you need to pick a good direction.

Save segmentation for last. There are lots of titles out there; any of them will mean more if you read up on targeting first. (BTW, MarketingProfs has a nice section on segmentation under the "resources" tab.)

I agree with Peg. I grabbed this book recently. The ideas, situations covered in the book are still give a fresh feeling. I also recommend this book to you.
