Manufacturing Companies That Also Distribute

We are a North American manufacturer working with local distribution partners in Europe. Our product is complementary to a common residential product manufactured by many other European companies. In some cases, these large manufacturing companies deal direct through their own dealer network and also distribute OEM products. Unlike our local distributors, their territory has no boundaries and they generally sell throughout Europe.

What strategy works best for working with one of these manufacturing companies where we already have an exclusive distributor and not add extra cost by adding another layer in the distribution chain ?
