Applying For A Job: Please Help Me Stand Out!

Posted by connors on 125 Points
I'm applying for the position. I have the qualifications they are looking for (and passion), yet I'm sure that there will be a lot of great candidates applying for this high profile position.

Any extraordinary ideas that would help me to stand out? (I'm pretty sure I'll have the opportunity to interview). For instance, if you have ideas I can present about marketing/outreach advertising, website or events in your community, I'd love to hear about it.

I'd appreciate any advise as I'd love to get this job!!!

Thanks for the great idea! I've already started to research other web sites, etc.

This idea might be obvious, but give some thought to your "personal brand". You can brand your resume, portfolio/ CV, etc. all with a powerful look and feel that conveys your unique advantages. You might tailor that with a particularly artistic look. The point is to pay a lot of attention to design, give thought to color and contrast.

There's also a night called "Thursday Night Thing" every month, which is a themed event. For example, one December the theme was "wrap". Visitors could make their own holiday wrapping paper (a local stationery store sponsored that part), and they had local rappers performing. It's neat, as a visitor, to enjoy not just the art, but the festitivities and music. Good luck on the interview!

OUR LITTLE SECRET....AND PROMISE NOT TO TELL.

    Hi Konners,

Hope you're having a great day but more importantly an outstanding life experience.

I could share many ideas with you but I'll save some for our other marketing experts to contribute on your behalf. Now if they don't jump in then I'll come back and add where they did not.

THE 1 THING EVERYONE FORGETS TO DO...BUT DON'T YOU DO WHAT THEY DO...
The one LITTLE secret weapon that I always employed in my arsenal of Passionate Evangelistic things to do that I found out by asking that hardly anyone else does these days (that will make you stand out after the inteview more than them all is this):

DO SOMETHING THAT NO ONE ELSE DOES AFTER AN INTERVIEW...
Konners you see most people on the drive back home reflect on the interview and imagine that they did one heck of a job. They pat themselves on the back and think about all of the great answers they offered. How they responded to the "What's your 5 or 10 year goal question". Or maybe how they impressed the interviewer with their stellar response to the "What's your area of weakness question". Then they make it home and they tell everyone in the house about how they think they had a great interview and they might even make a couple of calls to let some friends or maybe mom or dad know how they did. They'll eat a good meal, watch TV then go to bed and have a good nights rest. Several days later they'll wonder why no one has called and a week after that after hearing from no one they'll get afraid that maybe they didn't get the job.

    THE PROBLEM?...

THEY DID WHAT EVERYONE ELSE DOES...

    The solution?

    Do THIS...

Do what everyone else doesn't do (and finally here it is and please let it always remain our little secret...Do THIS:)

The one thing that I would do that made all the difference in the world to others and this eventually comes back to you like a boomerang in Australia...is SHARE MY GRATITUDE.

Yep this is what everyone else doesn't do that I do. I share my gratitude and appreciation for others. Why? Because most people in our generation are so, so under appreciated it's a pitiful shame we call ourselves human beings.

Most people say they are grateful but they DON'T ---Show it!---. So I Do-o-o-ooo what THEY DON'T...I show my gratitude (and this is exactly what I do and if you were smart you'd do it to!).

And here's more of my little secret...are you listening? I hope you are. After the interview I pull my car up to the nearest mailbox and for the next 30 minutes I write HANDWRITTEN ---THANK YOU NOTES---. I simply thank everyone that I met that day from the secretary on the way into the interview up to the person who gave me the opportunity to interview with them. And if there were others that I met along the way I'd send them thank you's too. (Always keep some extra stamps, envelopes and Thank you notes. Put them in your car, put them in your house or apartment. I even keep some in my bathroom and never leave home without them. I always have some in my bag I carry around (smile).

And that's how I stand out from everyone else that does an interview and that's the one thing that I'd like to share with you but please remember...don't tell anyone...it's our little secret. REMEMBER... our only real problem in life is our failure to be "MORE Creative" than we’ve ever been. If you “Invent” your opportunity YOU WILL most definitely create your future. I'm only an email away from you if you need further guidance, direction or you'd just like to talk to me personally. I'd love to talk with you. You see I love it when my customers are happy. Is there anything else I can do for you?

    Your Servant,

Lovingly Deremiah *CPE (Customer Passion Evangelist)

    PS
    I hope this makes sense
    Please don't ever underestimate
the power of those two little words
    Thank You!

...you'll be glad you did (smile)
Now hurry on...don't waste time complaining
    go and live exuberantly...like me.

    Deremiah,
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for your enthusiastic response. I already know the secret. It all stems from my mother (who's surely up there smiling right now) who sat me down from age 5 or so and "made" me write those thank you notes. Oh, what drudgery it was at the time.

Now, I totally agree with you. It's such a simple thing that most people don't seem to do in today's world! I read in an article recently that most people who DO send thank you notes do it through e-mail. No.....I want to receive a hand-written, sincere note, right from the heart. So of course, that's what I do in return. After interviews, and to all of the people who help me during my life's journey. Consider this a great big thank you - from the U.S. to Australia!

    Juliet,
Thank you for your excellent suggestions. With that said, I don't think that can ever be done quite enough!

    Rredmon,
I agree about the resume - clever does not always equate with substance. I've been spending time looking at the museum's current campaign and will definitely present future ideas in my interview. Thanks!

Thank you so much. Well said. The first thing I'm going to do is be very clear (if not stated on their materials, I will definitely get a copy) of their mission. I'll stay very focused on that, as nothing is more important than showing how I can help them to further their mission.

Thanks to everyone who responded. This was all great advise!
