Header Length

Is there an optimal header length for email marketing? Please note, I am not referring to the subject line, but the header in the body of the email.

It looks like there are about 240 characters in the preview pane on Outlook. That gives me plenty of space even for a 2 line header.

But how about on a iphone or Smartphone?

    I don't know about optimal but what I try to focus on in the header is ensuring that readers recognize, open and read the newsletter - subject line aside - I like my headers to serve to also help readers filter, store and find past emails and or issues (if it is a newsletter).

    Hard to do sometimes if your ESP automatically adds a header.

    On my iPhone the subject line is 35 characters and the "header" is 82. Not a lot to work with here.

    Update - It's funny how the info you need will find you when you need it most.

    A recent CopyBlogger post was about optimizing email marketing for mobile devices and mentioned that if you google "mobile device simulator" there are tools out there that will allow you to see what your email will look like on various devices.

    Thought others might want to know.
