International Name For A System

Posted by Anonymous on 3000 Points
We have been challenged to come up with a brand name for a payment security system that will be used online and POS. The name's usage context will be much like Intel on chips, NutraSweet on food and beverage, Plus or Cirrus on credit/debit cards, Microban on germ-killing surfaces, etc.

In essence, this patented system employs software that enables the card holder to generate a single use, unique, time-stamped, card number for each transaction or agreement. It is a generation beyond ShopSafe at Bank of America. Only the software knows how the transaction number connects the buyer with his account; not the vendor/store or the card processor. Because no store can retain the number, and with the transforming, chameleon-like nature of the card number, it represents the ultimate in iron-clad, fail-safe transaction security.

The brand name MUST have international acceptance (like VISA) but does not necessarily need to imply the system's function. It does not need to be a real word.

I am looking for NAME ideas, but also, and especially, any NEGATIVE connotations in other languages of names submitted by all posters.

Deadline is Tuesday, October 23, 2007. I appreciate EVERYONE's assistance!

Regards,

BARQ

Do you seek negative connotation intentionally or do you want to avoid trouble?

    Hi Barq,

I like this particular challenge and you know my greatest blessing to you would be that I could offer some suggestions that would really help you out...but are you looking for us to Brainstorm this thing purely from a name stand point? Or could you also help us see the customer type better so that our name types are fitting? Would this new product be something I would use or is it exclusive to a certain group or culture of business people or consumers?

Well Barq, I wish you the best and let me know how I can better serve you in this endeavour and REMEMBER... our only real problem in life is our failure to be "MORE Creative" than we’ve ever been. If you “Invent” your opportunity YOU WILL most definitely create your future. I'm only an email away from you if you need further guidance, direction or you'd just like to talk more about it. You see I love it when my customers are happy. Is there anything else I can do for you?

    Your Servant,

    Hi BARQ

if you review the various card brand names, most of the names are very simple and well-established english words like Master, VISA, Diner etc. some exceptions are Maestro and Cirrus, non-english words but not complex.

keeping that in mind, i would suggest you to go for words that are easy to relate and established word (rather than a new word which will take time for people to remember). accordingly my suggestions are....

    "Safe"
    "Sure"
    "Secure"
    "Szekerce"
    "Securus" (secure in latin)
    "Sekera" (slavic for secure)

"Alazar" (random in Spannish, since your card software creates random numbers)

    "Unico" (unique in Spannish)

    "Sicuro" (italian for Secure)

    "Segreto" (italian for Secret)

    "Cache" (french for concealed)

    "Celato" (italian for concealed)

"Proximo" or "Proxima" (spannish for Next, your software is next generation)

    hope these help.

    cheers!!

    Hello Jeff/BarQ

I would think of the story that goes with the name first and then the name becomes a logical tie to the new brand.

For example I thought of all the things that would make someone want to have the security associated with a single use credit card number (BTW there are a number of these systems out there)

I also looked up meanings of existing brands like VISA.

The big thing for this is it's "One time" or "Once" usage.

Another big thing is the ability to "THWART" criminals.

The last big thing is nobody ever "Sees this number/thing"

Based upon these brand characteristics. I propose

"NESS" as in the Loch Ness Monster. Few People have ever seen her, does she exist or doesn't she. I think it also leads into some good areas for logo development and for a memorable brand experience.

"NESS" is always there right below the surface protecting your critical private information from hackers and unscrupulous processing agents" When you see her again is anybodies guess. It also is the last part of "Witness" which is where I derived the word. With NESS you open a whole new world of security for your customers.

I also like VULCAN. It is a play on "virtual card numbers" hence VCN. Vulcan is the beneficial god of fire and a craftsperson. The software hammers out a new number for each transaction from something about its former client credit card number that no one else can deduce.

Those are two ideas, I am sure we can come up with more. To me, the story will sell the client on the brand not the name. The name just supports the story

    best of luck with it
    Phil.

I would recommend consulting some books on branding and marketing...also understanding the underlying principles of how exactly a name or trademark becomes a brand that is on the tip of everyone's tongue is mandatory before coming up with a name.

    Some great suggestions above.

Who is the target audience? What are you trying to communicate to whom? Not sure how you'll evaluate the suggestions, so it's not clear what direction to go.

We've done a lot of work on "ingredient" brands (like Stainmaster, Intel, NutraSweet/Equal, etc.), but in each case we started with a clear understanding of the target audience definition.

Not sure how you could do this otherwise. Just looking for "words" doesn't seem like a very fruitful way to approach this.

ALAZAR - reminds me of Balthazar or Bizarre.
BIMA - is the Hebrew word for podium where the Torah is kept.
SURE - reminds me of deodorant

CACHE - reads as both "CASH" and "CASHAY" depending on the language, but will probably be mispronounced as "CATCHY"
